EGALE Calls on the Government of Canada to Honour Its Promise

It is one year ago today that the Government of Canada tabled Towards Equality. We call on the Hon. Ray Hnatyshyn, Minister of Justice today to bring forward the legislative package promised in Towards Equality, “to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that sexual orientation is a prohibited ground for discrimination in relation to all areas of federal jurisdiction.”

The Hon. John Crosbie, M.P. said that it would take about a year to draft the legislation necessary to meet the recommendations that had been brought forward by the Parliamentary Committee on Equality Rights.

In the year since Towards Equality, we have witnessed the Legislatures of Ontario and the Yukon amend their Human Rights Codes to end discrimination based on sexual orientation. Quebec has had this legislation on for seven years.

It is time for all Canadian gay men and lesbians, their families, their children and their associates to enjoy true equality based on individual merit and ability, and not discrimination based on stereotypic assumption and innuendo.
