Contract Job Posting: Trans Symposium Coordinator

Egale Canada, through a grant obtained from Canadian Heritage-Multiculturalism, is seeking an energetic, self-motivated candidate with community organizing experience to coordinate a series of community events focused on “Reducing Barriers to inclusion within the larger LGBT community for Edmonton’s Trans community.” Egale Canada is looking to hire for a part-time coordinator position beginning Tuesday, April 12th, 2005.

The Event

The events will be held in Edmonton, Alberta during Trans Awareness Week 2005, which is the first week of May. Through these events we hope to bring together trans folk, interested community members, service providers and activists for workshops, small group discussions, films, performances and social opportunities.

The goals of the symposium are:

to share community building skills;
increase knowledge and understanding;
brainstorm and discuss strategies for reducing barriers and increasing inclusion of the local Trans community within the larger LGBT community.

The Job

The Coordinator will work approximately 15-20 hrs per week from now through Trans Awareness Week ending May 8th, 2005 and follow with the submission of the final report.

The Coordinator will work with the local organizing committee to:

Plan and develop a week of events;
Act as a resource for identifying speakers, panelists, performers, volunteers and other needed community resources for making the events happen;
Identify and book appropriate venues, and coordinate venue logistics (seating, setup, etc.);
Arrange for catering (snacks and drinks) for the event;
Coordinate whatever volunteer involvement is required to make the events happen. Liaise with Egale’s volunteer base as well as recruit volunteers from the local community;
Advertise the events to the local community with the assistance of Egale;
Participate in regular planning meetings, give regular updates to the designated Egale staff member, and contribute to the planning process;
Coordinate comprehensive and legible note-taking for the events;
Prepare a concise written report summarizing the issues raised and recommendations made during the events.

Qualifications:

A good understanding of the issues impacting the local Trans community;
Experience organizing similar community-oriented events;
Good contacts within and/or experience working with the Edmonton Trans community;
An understanding of and commitment to the principles of anti-oppressive community organizing and the ability to put these principles into practice;
Good oral and written communication ability, tact and good judgment.
