The federal election will be held on January 23, 2006, and LGBT equality hangs in the balance.
On the very first day of the election campaign, Stephen Harper announced that if he becomes Prime Minister he will re-open the equal marriage issue and ask Parliament to take away our equal right to marry.
We at Egale are doing all we can to ensure the next Parliament continues to advance our equality, rather than roll back the clock. We are working riding by riding to ensure that supportive MPs are elected and MPs who seek to deny equal rights are defeated.
We can only succeed with your support!! We need your help to make Parliament a place of progress and not the home of equality roll-backs!
Here’s how you can help. Take our 4 Election Steps:
Step 1: GET INFORMED – find your candidates and see where they stand on LGBT issues
Step 2: HELP A CANDIDATE – once you’ve decided who to support, take action and contact them. Get an election sign, volunteer, attend all candidates meetings and, vote!
Step 3: INVITE YOUR FRIENDS – ask friends, family and colleagues to visit Egale’s website and take action
Step 4: DONATE TO EGALE - we count on community support to keep Egale running
Take all four steps today!
We’re also sending out our 2006 candidate survey, and will have results posted as soon as possible in the new year. Unfortunately, our experience tells us many candidates won’t answer our questionnaire. That’s why we need your help.
Bonus Step
Please do what you can to find out where your local candidates stand on issues like re-opening equal marriage, equality for trans people and taking action to end homo, bi and transphobia. Call their campaign offices, talk to them when they come to your door, and even go to all-candidates meetings and ask questions. Then let Egale know what you find, by e-mailing us at election2006@egale.ca or calling our office at 1-888-204-7777 and speaking to Nigel at x224.
We are posting contact info for local candidates to our website as fast as we can and as the information becomes available.
