Canadians for Equal MarriageReleaseLiberals to extend parliament for same-sex vote: Canadian Press, CTVJune 20, 2005OTTAWA—The minority Liberal government has served notice it will ask MPs to extend Parliament’s sitting indefinitely, which could bring same-sex marriage legislation to a vote. Government House Leader Tony Valeri says he’s given notice that a motion to extend House sitting hours is ready to be brought in for a vote. He says he was forced to draft the motion because of what he calls obstruction by the Conservatives on the last of the federal budget legislation. Valeri says the same-sex marriage proposal would come to a vote if a majority of MPs vote to extend the hours. Same-sex marriage supporters have been critical of Prime Minister Paul Martin for refusing to bring the legislation to a vote, saying all MPs have made up their minds after seemingly endless debate. Parliament is scheduled to rise for a summer break June 23. Click here for link to CTV. |
