Press Release

September 1, 2004

Celebrate Bisexuality Day

Celebrate Bisexuality Day, held on September 23 of each year, puts bisexuality on the map with its call to promote bi visibility and celebrate the wonderful diversity of bisexual lives.

Toronto bi activist Cheryl Dobinson points out that “it’s important to have a day like this for bisexuals; it raises awareness in mainstream society and also in gay and lesbian communities about the existence of bisexual people and our unique issues, history, and culture.”

The 1999 brainchild of three US bi activists, Celebrate Bisexuality Day has quickly become an international success. Events have been held across the globe, from Australia to South Africa, from New Zealand to Sweden, and from Germany to Japan. There have also been numerous celebrations each year in the US and Canada.

Gigi Raven Wilbur, a bi/trans activist and one of the founders of Celebrate Bisexuality Day, feels that the day “captures the ideals of freedom and allows people to envision a world where people can safely explore different options creatively through the expression of celebration.”
