Press ReleaseSeptember 22, 2005Egale supports Celebrate Bisexuality Day on September 23rdEgale Canada is pleased to announce that this Friday September 23rd is Celebrate Bisexuality Day. Held on the same date each year, Celebrate Bisexuality Day puts bisexuality on the map with its call to promote bi visibility and its invitation to celebrate the wonderful diversity of bisexual lives. “The day gives us a chance to raise the profile of bisexuality and bring people’s attention to the uniqueness of our lives,” says Toronto bisexual activist Cheryl Dobinson. Hilary Cook, Board Member of Egale explains, “bisexuals have to contend with being seen as ‘gay’ or ‘straight’ depending on the sex of their partner. Too often the history, culture and community of bisexuals gets lost under a broad umbrella marked only ‘Lesbian and Gay.’ Celebrate Bisexuality Day gives us a great opportunity to raise our visibility both within the LGBT community and outside of it.” Echoing that sentiment, Margaret Robinson, a Director of the Toronto Bisexuality Education Project, points out that “Bisexuals often get lost in larger GLBT events, so having a day that’s specifically for us is important. It acts as a reminder that sometimes it’s important to focus on bisexuals, and direct energy toward building our community.” Celebrate Bisexuality Day was started in 1999 in the US and has quickly become an international success. Over the past 6 years, events have been held across North America, in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Egale Canada advances equality and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-identified (LGBT) people, and their families, across Canada. Founded in 1986, Egale has over 4,000 members including people in each and every province and territory of Canada. Its work includes political action, legal interventions and public education and awareness. Celebrate Bisexuality Day events: Celebrate Bisexuality Day!
