Our Realities

A Pan-Canadian Competition to Produce Short Films Capturing the Realities of Intersecting Oppressions

Call for Script Proposals

Egale Canada, the national GLBT organization, is pleased to invite film makers across Canada to participate in “Our Realities.” Artists may submit their creative ideas and scripts for short films capturing the realities of intersecting oppressions, with two submissions awarded production costs of up to $5000.

This unprecedented project exemplifies Egale’s commitment to promote an intersectional approach (in addressing oppressions) into all aspects of its work, including advocacy endeavours. As such, Egale is seeking scripts that can shed light on the intersection and connection between transphobia, biphobia, and homophobia with other forms of oppression.

In other words, Egale’s aim is to assert that the struggle against one form of oppression (such as heterosexism/homophobia/lesbophobia/biphobia/transphobia) cannot in practice be separated from the many other struggles that members of our communities are engaged in (such as struggles against sexism, ableism, racism, or economic disadvantage).

The format may vary and is open to each candidate’s creativity and artistic taste. However, the artist is expected to produce a final project (documentary or fiction) of 20 to 25 minutes (1 plot/movie or a collage of shorter plots/movies). The proposal must address the intersection of two or more identity-formation factors or sources of oppression.

Eligibility

  • There is no submission fee.
  • The competition is open to any person who resides in Canada. Egale encourages applicants from historically under-represented and marginalized communities as a means to give voice to the experiences and struggles of people facing multiple forms of oppression.
  • Completed applications and support material must be received no later than the closing date. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
  • Submission Deadline: September 17, 2004.

Evaluation

Projects will be assessed based on originality of the script, the filmmaker’s understanding and depiction of an intersectional approach, the film’s artistic merit, its broadcast potential, and the feasibility of the project based on applicant’s access to pre/postproduction facilities. Only successful applicants will be notified of the results, no later than two months after the competition closing date.
