May 11th, 2011 Are our Schools Safe?It is extremely unlikely that there is any class in any high school anywhere in Canada, public or private, religious or secular, that does not have students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirited, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ). Being harassed, insulted, and told that their identities belong in the guidance office, not in the classroom, will not succeed in making LGBTQ students heterosexual and gender-conforming; it will only make them unhappy. Canada's national LGBT human rights organization, Egale, is releasing the results of: Every Class in Every School: Final Report on the First National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Canadian Schools (Catherine Taylor, Ph.D., Tracey Peter, Ph.D., et al.), which documents findings about homophobic and transphobic comments, verbal, physical, and sexual harassment, unsafe spaces, safer schools policies, and Gay-Straight Alliances in Canadian schools today. The report identifies five particularly marginalized groups and presents eleven concrete recommendations to help improve Canadian school climates.
