Call for Nominations: Egale Canada Board of Directors
Egale Canada is seeking nominations for its Board of Directors.
Our procedures are designed to ensure that directors are elected through an open and transparent process. Egale Canada is searching for candidates who support the objectives and activities of the organization and are active members of the organization. Egale Canada is made up of a general membership and a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is a body of up to 14 individuals elected from and by the general membership for staggered two-year terms. Elections are held annually.
The Egale Canada Board membership is intended to reflect a diversity of experience, skills, knowledge and abilities suited to the strategic needs of the organization. We are looking for members from across Canada, from all areas of the community and from a range of backgrounds (e.g., gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity). The role of Egale Canada Board members is to be involved in the:
Creation and ongoing evaluation of the organization's mission, vision and values
Strategic planning
Fundraising
Monitoring the organization's progress towards achieving its mission and strategic direction
Stewardship
Financial oversight (due diligence)
Board self-maintenance - including recruitment and orientation of new Directors
NOMINATIONS
To stand for election, an individual must:
Be an Egale Canada member in good standing (30 days prior to the date fixed for the meeting)
Be nominated (and accept) or self-nominate by completing and submitting the Nomination Form
Submit a statement of interest (up to 250 words describing what knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience you would bring to Egale Canada in the role of Director with explicit reference to the criteria set out below) and why you want to serve as an Egale Canada Director
Submit a resume
Comply with Egale Canada's nomination/election procedures
Only Egale Canada members can nominate an individual for election or can stand for election (be nominated). Self nomination is accepted.
Nominations can be made anytime up to April 12. No later than 5pm eastern standard time.
Nominations received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Nomination Committee.
CANDIDATES MUST BE WILLING TO:
commit to a two-year term on the Board of Directors
devote an average of 3 hours per week to the organization
attend monthly board meetings, well prepared in advance
sit on at least one committee and, as needed, ad hoc committees
participate in Egale Canada events (e.g., Board retreats, Fundraising, Outreach)
be readily accessible and responsive to email and voicemail communication
In addition to meeting the requirements outlined above, ideal candidates for Director will have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following:
Financial management
Long-range planning and decision-making that affects the organization for short-term effectiveness and long-term goals
Setting financial goals in conjunction with the overall strategic objectives of Egale Canada
Legal
Not-for-profits, charitable status
Human Resources
Human Rights
Leading initiatives on increasing the diversity of an organization at all levels - including volunteers, staff
Familiarity with direction setting based on the strategic goals of the organization and the associated policy formation and implementation
Event Management
Familiarity with how events are organized and run
Not-for-profit management
Strong experience and understanding of how not-for-profits function
How to advance the goals and priorities within an organization and externally
LGBT communities
Familiarity with, and willingness to, form greater connections with these communities
Strategic planning
Determining priorities, long-term planning
Understanding of how linkages between Egale Canada and corporate sponsors, new fundraising initiatives and government programs impact the organization.
Community outreach and communication
Experience building relationships with community members, community organizations, government officials, external relations
Business management
Experience with administration - budgeting, hiring, firing and performance of employees and volunteers
Evaluating performance, existing programs and personnel
