TORONTO: Egale Canada is moving into a bigger space at 185 Carlton Street in Toronto.
Egale has outgrown its current home at 8 Wellington St. E., a space that has been donated generously by Navigator Ltd., for the past three years. “Our move to this new larger space marks a significant turning point in the future direction and stability of the organization,” says Helen Kennedy, Egale’s Executive Director. “This new office will provide space for additional programming and services for our Safe Schools Campaign, a campaign that stems from the realization that despite the legal advances won by our community in recent years, there is still a significant disjuncture between legal equality and the real life experience faced by LGBT youth,” says Kennedy.
Homophobic and transphobic bullying, harassment, violence, depression, homelessness and suicide are endemic among LGBTQ youth across Canada. Nationally, over 75% of LGBTQ students reported feeling unsafe at school. As Canada’s only national LGBT human rights organization, Egale is working in communities across Canada to create safer and more welcoming school environments. This involves empowering youth, and making parents, teachers, school administrators, police services, corporations and community organizations partners in our children’s fight for dignity and basic human rights. Egale’s recently launched safer schools and inclusive education website can be viewed at: www.mygsa.ca.
Egale Canada is Canada’s LGBT human rights organization: advancing equality, diversity, education, and justice.
